Donald Trump hints at a possible third presidential run, challenging the 22nd Amendment. He discusses potential scenarios and ongoing efforts to amend presidential term limits.
Donald Trump is back at it again with his eyebrow-raising remarks, this time teasing the idea of running for a third term as President. In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump claimed he wasn’t joking when he said he might make another bid for the Oval Office. "A lot of people want me to do it," he said, adding a sprinkle of suspense with, "it’s very early in the administration." Trump clarified that he’s currently focused on his current term but left the door ajar for future possibilities, stating, "It is far too early to think about it."
Of course, there’s the pesky matter of the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, which caps presidents at two terms. Ratified in 1951—after Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s unprecedented four-term presidency—the amendment makes this third-term chatter sound like wishful thinking. FDR, as history recalls, led the country through the Great Depression and World War II before passing away during his fourth term, leaving Vice President Harry Truman to take the reins.
Trump, however, seems unfazed by constitutional barriers. "There are methods which you could do it," he hinted when questioned about how he could pull off a third term. NBC floated a scenario where Vice President JD Vance could run, win, and hand over the presidency to Trump—a political relay race, if you will. Trump acknowledged this as one potential path but cryptically added, "There are others too," leaving everyone guessing.
When asked what’s driving this ambition, Trump kept it simple: "I like working." Well, give the man credit for enthusiasm.
The idea of extending Trump’s presidency isn’t entirely new. Longtime ally Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee introduced a resolution earlier this year that would amend the Constitution to allow three terms for a president, though only two consecutive four-year stints. Ogles argued that Trump’s leadership is crucial for reversing the nation’s decline and restoring its greatness, saying, "He must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal." The proposed amendment even outlined specific term limits to prevent unchecked power.
While this might sound like political theater, it’s worth noting that the White House hasn’t commented on the matter, leaving speculation to swirl. Whether Trump is serious or just enjoying stirring the pot, one thing’s for sure: he knows how to keep the headlines buzzing.

Trump hinting at a third term feels like both classic Trump and a guaranteed way to rile up constitutional scholars. The cryptic 'methods' he mentioned sound straight out of a Netflix political drama—Vice President JD Vance handing over power? Really? While the 22nd Amendment stands firm, the idea of amending it for a third term is both audacious and, let’s admit, very on-brand for Trump. Whether this is a serious move or just headline bait, it’s certainly entertaining.
