Aaron Rodgers remains in NFL free agency limbo for 2025 as the Pittsburgh Steelers emerge as his likely destination after the Vikings trade for Sam Howell.

It’s been a wild ride for Aaron Rodgers, who’s still floating in NFL free agency limbo heading into the 2025 season. While the spotlight was on Shedeur Sanders during day three of the NFL Draft, ESPN’s Adam Schefter slipped in some news that could finally narrow down Rodgers’ options to just one team.

The Minnesota Vikings were on everyone's rumor radar thanks to J.J. McCarthy’s season-ending injury last year. But after the Vikings doubled down on McCarthy as their starter and pulled off a trade for Sam Howell from the Seattle Seahawks, that ship has pretty much sailed for Rodgers. Howell seemed more than happy about the move, celebrating his new gig on Instagram. In exchange, the Vikings sent their fifth-round pick to Seattle, who used it to snag defensive lineman Rylie Mills.

With Minnesota off the table, the focus shifts squarely to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite having the chance, the Steelers chose not to draft a quarterback in the first round—opting for Oregon’s Derrick Harmon instead. Even as the draft rolled on, Pittsburgh kept picking up everything but quarterbacks, finally waiting until the sixth round to select Will Howard, a local Ohio State guy. Clearly, they’re leaving space for someone… ahem.

Steelers owner Art Rooney II and head coach Mike Tomlin haven’t exactly been coy about their interest in Rodgers. Tomlin noted, "That’s certainly a possibility," when asked about the quarterback, adding that talks have been "productive." The ball is entirely in Rodgers’ court now—he could sign with Pittsburgh, retire, or just keep everyone guessing (classic Rodgers move).

Pittsburgh sweetened the deal with a trade for D.K. Metcalf, adding to an already flashy offensive lineup featuring George Pickens, Jaylen Warren, Pat Freiermuth, and rookie running back Kaleb Johnson. The QB room is filling up with Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson too, but let’s be real: none of them have Rodgers’ four MVPs.

So, after all the buzz and draft day surprises, it looks like the Steelers are the last team left truly in need of Rodgers’ talents for 2025. The next move? That’s entirely up to Rodgers—and let’s hope he doesn’t keep us waiting until preseason, or worse, until he’s eligible for AARP.

Rodgers’ career decisions have become the NFL’s version of ‘Will he or won’t he?’—except with more mustache and less romance. At this point, the Steelers’ strategy seems to be ‘build the roster and hope Rodgers finally swipes right.’ I just hope he makes up his mind before they have to print team jerseys with a giant question mark on them!
