Australian PM Anthony Albanese wins historic second term, defeating Peter Dutton amid cost-of-living crisis and Trump-inspired policy debates.

Sydney, Australia - Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has secured a historic second term, becoming the first Australian leader in 21 years to achieve consecutive victories. In a vibrant victory speech in Sydney, Albanese emphasized a uniquely Australian approach to global challenges, stating, "We face the world our way, caring for each other while forging a bold future." His center-left Labor Party appears poised to expand its majority in the 151-seat House of Representatives, defying the typical trend of second-term losses.

The election saw Albanese’s rival, opposition leader Peter Dutton, suffer a stunning defeat, losing both the election and his parliamentary seat of 24 years. Dutton’s conservative Liberal Party faced criticism for echoing the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump, a strategy that backfired after Trump’s global tariffs soured international sentiment. The Labor campaign cleverly dubbed Dutton “DOGE-y Dutton,” a jab at his perceived alignment with Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency.

Energy and inflation dominated the campaign, with Australia grappling with a cost-of-living crisis. Foodbank Australia reported 3.4 million households faced food insecurity last year, underscoring the economic strain. While both parties committed to net-zero emissions by 2050, their paths diverged sharply. Dutton pushed for nuclear power to lower electricity costs, while Labor warned his plans would gut public services to fund seven nuclear generators—a contentious proposal in a nation with no existing nuclear infrastructure.

International leaders, including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, congratulated Albanese, highlighting Australia’s role as a key ally. Rubio praised the “enduring alliance” rooted in shared democratic values, while Starmer called the U.K.-Australia bond a “long-distance friendship” poised for deeper collaboration on trade and energy.

Despite a minor party, Trumpet of Patriots, banking on Trump-inspired policies with heavy funding from mining magnate Clive Palmer, it garnered just 2% of the vote. Political analyst Zareh Ghazarian noted the Liberal Party’s loss as a “massive rebuke,” questioning the impact of the “DOGE-y Dutton” label but affirming Labor’s resounding triumph.
