Passengers on an American Airlines flight evacuated via the wing after smoke filled the cabin at Augusta Regional Airport. No injuries reported; FAA investigating the incident.

Passengers aboard an American Airlines flight had a less-than-routine landing in Georgia when smoke reportedly filled the cabin, leading to an evacuation—on the wing of the plane. Yes, you read that right: on the wing.

Video footage captured by passenger Sean O’Conor shows travelers clutching their luggage as they carefully exit the jet via its wing at Augusta Regional Airport on Tuesday. "It smelled like the brakes were burning or something, the cabin was filled with smoke, and we climbed out on the wing," a voice is heard saying in the video. "It looks like everybody is safe. Welcome to Augusta." Quite the Southern hospitality, minus the smoky drama.

American Airlines later addressed the incident, explaining that the smoke stemmed from a maintenance issue aboard American Eagle Flight 5406, operated by PSA Airlines. The statement ensured that all passengers were safely escorted to the terminal and apologized for the inconvenience. "The safety of our customers is our top priority," the airline emphasized.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the matter, confirming that the crew reported cabin smoke after landing at approximately 9:50 a.m. local time. Passengers were deplaned on the airfield and transported to the terminal by bus.

Following an inspection of the Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft, authorities determined that the smoke was caused by an electrical issue, according to a spokesperson cited by WJBF. So, while the situation had all the makings of a Hollywood thriller, thankfully, it was resolved without injuries.

Though dramatic evacuations like this are rare, it’s a stark reminder that planes can sometimes make exits feel more like action sequences. Fortunately, all passengers are safe, and Augusta gets to keep its charm intact—wing evacuations and all.

Did anyone else get the mental image of passengers doing their best balancing act while stepping onto the wing? It’s a miracle no one tried to pose for Instagram mid-evacuation. On a serious note, kudos to the crew and passengers for handling the unexpected like pros.
