‘American Pie’ Star Jason Biggs Drops Nearly 40 Pounds After Health Scare and Sobriety Journey

Jason Biggs is flipping the script on his health. The actor, best known for his role in "American Pie," has revealed he’s lost almost 40 pounds after a recent health scare got his attention. Biggs, now 46, shared that he started experiencing some serious cholesterol issues—probably not helped by his confessed love of devouring entire pints of ice cream. At least he owns it with a laugh.
Biggs made the decision to overhaul his diet and exercise habits, saying, "It’s been a journey." And what a journey—he dropped his cholesterol by 70 points and shed 35 pounds in the process. Not quite a high school reunion transformation, but pretty close.
He admits it wasn’t an overnight success story, and he isn’t exactly sure when the health kick began, just that it took "a while" to get himself back on track. For anyone wondering what his ultimate vice was, he says it’s gelato from a New York City shop, which is a dangerously relatable weakness for anyone who’s ever said, "just one scoop."
But Biggs’s health journey didn’t stop at diet and exercise. Back in March 2024, he opened up about his struggles with alcoholism, revealing on his wife Jenny Mollen’s podcast that while he was "working on things" in therapy, he was still secretly buying vodka and drinking in secret. He described knowing just how to fly under the radar—drinking enough to numb out, but still able to carry on a conversation without raising suspicion. He even managed to keep it hidden from his wife, which is a level of sneaky most people only aspire to for birthday presents, not real life.
Biggs and Mollen, married since 2008 and parents to two sons, Sid and Lazlo, have seen their share of ups and downs. In 2018, Biggs went public on Instagram about his sobriety, admitting that quitting booze and drugs was "hard" and that it took several tries to get to a year sober. He encouraged others not to be ashamed and to seek help, saying, "We can do this."
Of course, Biggs’s career has had its own plot twists. Although he became a household name thanks to "American Pie," he’s said that his biggest professional regret was turning down the role of Ted Mosby in "How I Met Your Mother." At the time, he wasn’t sure he wanted to make the leap to television—a decision that, looking back, he calls obnoxious. Hollywood, as always, is a land of second guesses and what-ifs.
Through it all, Biggs’s story is one of resilience, self-awareness, and a willingness to laugh at himself—even when things get heavy. And with nearly 40 pounds gone, a healthier lifestyle, and years of sobriety under his belt, it looks like this is one slice of "American Pie" with a much happier ending.

Jason Biggs trading ice cream for kale and vodka for therapy—now that’s a Hollywood plot twist I didn’t see coming. If only there was an Oscar for best leading role in 'Dodging Cholesterol,' he’d have my vote. Also, shoutout to anyone who can keep gelato a secret in a New York apartment—now that’s real stealth.
