New study reveals the most sleep-deprived U.S. cities, with Honolulu and Memphis leading. Learn how your city impacts your sleep and health.
Ever wonder why you’re tossing and turning all night? Your city might be to blame. A new Innerbody study, tapping into CDC data, ranks the 100 most populous U.S. cities by sleep deprivation, factoring in sleep duration, quality, and culprits like obesity, alcohol use, mental distress, physical inactivity, and even noise and light pollution.
The results? The eastern U.S. is a hotspot for sleepless nights, with Ohio cities popping up like insomniacs at a midnight coffee shop. Honolulu, Hawaii, takes the crown for shortest sleep duration—42.3% of adults there get less than seven hours. Meanwhile, Memphis, Tennessee, leads in poor sleep quality, with New Orleans and Norfolk, Virginia, not far behind.
But it’s not all bad news. Some cities, often in cooler climates, boast better sleep. Think places where the night air feels like a lullaby. Sleep expert Wendy Troxel, PhD, told WTFNewsRoom that your zip code can shape your sleep as much as your genes. Her research in Sleep Health pushes for neighborhood fixes—less noise, better lighting—to boost shuteye and cut risks of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.
So, next time you’re counting sheep, consider your city’s role. Maybe it’s time to move—or at least get better curtains.

Honolulu’s got folks sleeping less than a hula dancer at a luau—42.3% under seven hours! Maybe it’s all those late-night ukulele jams. And Memphis? Poor sleep quality’s got residents dreaming of Elvis in better beds.
