Brief

Chicago’s Field Museum uncovers new Archaeopteryx fossil details, revealing early bird evolution with advanced feather and skull features.

A remarkable fossil at Chicago’s Field Museum is rewriting the story of early bird evolution. The pigeon-sized Archaeopteryx, one of the best-preserved of its 14 known specimens, reveals stunning details about its feathers, hands, and feet, shedding light on the transition from dinosaurs to birds 150 million years ago.

Using UV light and CT scans, scientists uncovered soft tissues showing specialized tertial feathers on the wings, a feature tied to flight in modern birds but absent in small-feathered dinosaurs. This suggests Archaeopteryx could indeed take flight, though it likely spent much of its time scampering on the ground or climbing trees, with mobile fingers and grippy toe pads.

The fossil’s skull offers clues to an evolving beak, hinting at the first steps toward the flexible beaks of today’s birds. Its vertebral column, with 24 vertebrae, also corrects earlier counts, adding a tiny but telling detail to its anatomy.

Acquired by the museum in 2024 after passing through private collectors, this fossil stands as a testament to how much we still have to learn about a creature discovered over 160 years ago. It’s a bridge between worlds—part dinosaur, part bird, and wholly fascinating.

This Archaeopteryx is the ultimate multitasker—flying, climbing, and posing for UV light like a Jurassic rock star. Bet it had a better wingspan than my last flight’s legroom!
