NFL legend Barry Sanders says Lions' Super Bowl hopes rest on star running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, as Detroit ramps up its championship aspirations.

The Detroit Lions have been knocking on the Super Bowl's door for two straight seasons—making the conference championship in 2023 and racking up an impressive 15 wins in 2024. But the big game still seems to be just out of reach, and now the focus is on what exactly will push them over the finish line.

According to Hall of Famer Barry Sanders, the answer is simple: Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery are the dynamic duo that could finally make it happen. Sanders didn't hold back, declaring them "the best duo in the NFL and there’s no reason that’s going to change any time soon." If Detroit is going to make Super Bowl dreams a reality, Sanders is betting it'll be thanks to these two workhorses.

Gibbs has already earned his stripes, leading the NFL with 16 rushing touchdowns and stacking up 1,412 rushing yards. That's back-to-back Pro Bowl nods, by the way—no big deal, just quietly becoming a household name. Montgomery, the seasoned vet, turned in a rock-solid year himself with 775 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, showing everyone what he can do when he’s at full strength.

Sanders also pointed out that Montgomery’s arrival from the Bears and the monster offensive line in Detroit has only made things scarier for opponents. And with rookie Tate Ratledge joining Taylor Decker, Christian Mahogany, Frank Ragnow, and Penei Sewell, the Lions' O-line is looking like a brick wall with attitude.

Since coach Dan Campbell took the reins, the Lions have completely flipped the script on how the league sees them. The expectations keep getting higher, and Detroit has shown they can dominate a regular season. But, as everyone in Motor City knows, the only thing left is to finally break into the Super Bowl—because, honestly, the city’s patience is thinner than a Lions fan’s voice after a playoff game.
