Ben Affleck is showing that some friendships never lose their spark—or their ability to roast each other. The 52-year-old actor recently poked fun at his longtime pal Matt Damon after photos emerged of Damon looking impressively fit and shirtless on the set of "The Odyssey."
During a chat on the "Today" show, Affleck didn’t hold back, joking, "First time Matt’s got into shape in his life, rips his shirt off." Apparently, Damon was all too eager to flaunt his new physique, much to Affleck’s amusement. Affleck continued, "He's like, ‘Who can I show this off to?!’ And I was like, ‘You want to just hold back a little… there’s no shirtless scene, he keeps asking when he can take off his shirt… you’re not naked in this, it’s ‘The Odyssey.’" Someone definitely missed the memo about ancient Greek dress codes.
Damon, age 54, was recently spotted in Favignana, Italy, filming for "The Odyssey". He was seen wearing little more than a ragged cloth and a rugged gray beard, looking every bit the weathered hero—if Odysseus had access to a Hollywood gym, that is.
This star-studded take on Homer’s classic is being helmed by Christopher Nolan, with a cast that includes Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Tom Holland. So, even if Damon’s abs aren’t part of the script, there’s plenty of star power to go around.
Affleck’s playful ribbing didn’t stop at Damon's new look. During another segment, Affleck was asked if Damon was jealous of his bromance with "The Accountant 2" co-star Jon Bernthal. Affleck responded with a laugh, "Yeah, I think he’s jealous wherever he is. I hope he's jealous, and I hope his feelings are really hurt. You’re not included in this friendship. You’re on the outside of this, sorry." With friends like these, who needs enemies?
Their friendship, which began when Damon was 10 and Affleck was 8, has survived decades in Hollywood—from their early days bonding over acting to their shared breakout with "Good Will Hunting." Damon has previously said he’s grateful to have avoided the level of public scrutiny that’s followed Affleck, calling himself "really lucky" and, by comparison, a bit "boring."
Over the years, Damon has kept a lower profile, even working hard to avoid tabloid drama before settling down with his wife, Luciana Barroso. Still, the bond between him and Affleck is as tight as ever—shirtless gags and all.
Editor's Comments
If I ever get abs like Matt Damon, you’d better believe I’d be looking for the nearest toga too. Ben and Matt’s friendship is basically the Hollywood version of that sibling who never lets you forget your most embarrassing moments. At this rate, the real epic isn’t 'The Odyssey'—it’s surviving your best friend’s sense of humor.
