Brief

Bill Maher says he'd interview Trump 'of course', shares candid takes on past presidents and why he's never short on criticism for anyone in office.

Bill Maher isn’t one to shy away from a conversation—especially not with a president, and definitely not with Donald Trump. During a recent episode of his "Club Random" podcast, Maher made it crystal clear: if he got the chance to interview Trump on his show, he’d say yes in a heartbeat. His response? "Yeah, of course, he's the president of the United States. Are you crazy?" Sometimes the obvious answer is the best one.

Maher, who’s pretty much made a career out of roasting just about everyone in politics, shared some behind-the-scenes stories about his experiences with various presidents. He recalled how Barack Obama—his all-time favorite—avoided coming on his show for almost his entire presidency. Maher joked he had to "shame him into it" by year eight, and even then, it wasn’t exactly party vibes. The interview took place in a sterile White House interview room, not in front of Maher’s usual raucous studio audience. Not exactly the setting for stand-up comedy gold.

Getting candid, Maher said he actually felt freer to speak his mind with Trump than with Obama or Clinton. He described Trump as the kind of person you can say anything to without worrying about holding back. For better or worse, Trump’s reputation for unpredictability apparently extends to his personal interactions, too. Maher admitted he didn’t bother to censor himself, which, let’s be real, is very on-brand.

But don’t confuse Maher’s willingness to chat with Trump for an endorsement. He’s still plenty critical of the former president’s time in office, describing Trump’s first 100 days as a "s--- show"—and not in the fun circus way. He rattled off a laundry list of grievances, from government inefficiency to firing the guy in charge of election integrity, to, well, Andrew Tate. Maher made it clear: if there’s something to criticize, he’s got the receipts.

I’d pay good money to see a Maher-Trump interview—imagine the awkward silences and wild tangents. Also, is there a presidential hall of fame for dodging talk shows? Obama would be a shoe-in.
