Bill Maher warns Democrats are doomed if they don’t confront young members’ radical anti-Israel views and embrace American values.
Bill Maher, the sharp-tongued host of HBO’s Real Time, didn’t hold back in his latest monologue, warning that the Democratic Party is on a collision course with disaster if it doesn’t confront the radical anti-Israel sentiments bubbling up among its younger members. Maher called out a growing trend where some young Democrats seem to cheer for Palestinian causes while turning their backs on American values, a stance he sees as a political death knell.
With his signature blend of wit and exasperation, Maher pointed to polls showing many young liberals are downright embarrassed to be American. “Like America’s your mom picking you up from school?” he quipped, poking fun at their lack of perspective. He argued that this generation’s disdain for their own country is matched only by their troubling admiration for groups like Hamas, which some view as a liberation movement. At elite campuses like Yale, chants honoring martyrs have become disturbingly common, he noted.
Maher didn’t stop there. He slammed the hypocrisy of young progressives who champion causes like ‘Globalize the Intifada’ while ignoring the harsh realities of life under regimes they seem to romanticize. Displaying images of women in oppressive full-body coverings, he reminded viewers that America, for all its flaws, still offers freedoms—elections, dissent, religious liberty—that don’t exist in places like Gaza. “Our democracy may be on life support, but we still have elections. They don’t,” he said pointedly.
The comedian also took aim at Democratic leaders like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, recalling a rally where a Palestinian flag was draped over an American one. Maher insisted that someone should’ve stepped up to set the record straight: the Stars and Stripes, not the Palestinian flag, symbolizes freedom. If Democrats keep indulging this “we like the terrorists” mindset, Maher warned, they’re doomed to repeat the missteps of past elections, where fringe ideas alienated voters.
Maher’s message was clear: the party needs to grow a spine, rebuke the radicalism, and reconnect with the values that resonate beyond the echo chambers of youth activism. Otherwise, they’re handing their opponents a playbook for victory.

Maher’s sounding the alarm like a political smoke detector, but will the Democrats hit snooze? Young liberals chanting for Hamas at Yale is like rooting for the iceberg on the Titanic. And that Palestinian flag stunt at the Sanders-AOC rally? It’s like swapping your team’s jersey for the rival’s mid-game. Time for the Dems to ditch the rose-colored glasses and remember: freedom’s not a global buffet—you don’t get to pick and choose the bits you like.
