Billy Joel battles brain disorder NPH, cancels concerts; wife Alexis remains hopeful for recovery.
Billy Joel, the iconic "Piano Man," faces a challenging chapter as he battles normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a brain disorder impacting his vision, hearing, and balance. The diagnosis, announced on Friday, forced the cancellation of his upcoming concerts, a tough blow for the 76-year-old music legend whose performances have long united fans in joyous sing-alongs. "We’re hopeful for his recovery," his wife, Alexis Roderick, shared on Instagram, expressing gratitude for the swift diagnosis and outpouring of support from fans.
NPH, a condition where excess cerebrospinal fluid presses on the brain, is treatable with surgery, though Joel’s immediate focus is on physical therapy as advised by his doctors. The "Uptown Girl" singer, known for turning arenas into intimate gatherings with hits like "We Didn’t Start the Fire," is prioritizing his health, leaving fans eagerly awaiting his return to the stage.
Adding a heartfelt note, Joel’s ex-wife, Christie Brinkley, sent love and memories of his vibrant concerts. "You turn an arena of strangers into a living room full of friends," she wrote, recalling a clip of her and daughter Sailor dancing at one of his shows. Their daughter, Alexa Ray, joins the chorus of well-wishers hoping for Joel’s speedy recovery.
This isn’t the first hurdle for Joel this year. Earlier, he postponed tour dates for a separate medical procedure, and a minor stumble during a February performance at Mohegan Sun Arena showed his resilience. With a career spanning decades and a recent single, "Turn the Lights Back On," Joel’s passion for music remains undimmed, even as he navigates this health setback.
