Billy Joel battles rare brain disorder, cancels concerts, but assures fans he’s not dying. The Piano Man focuses on recovery with therapy.
Billy Joel, the legendary Piano Man, is facing health challenges but wants fans to know he’s far from checking out. Diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare brain condition affecting his vision, hearing, and balance, Joel has canceled all upcoming concerts to focus on recovery. The condition, caused by a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the skull, is manageable with surgery, and Joel is undergoing physical therapy under medical guidance.
In a recent chat on The Howard Stern Show, Howard Stern shared that he celebrated Joel’s 76th birthday with him, guitar in hand, serenading the icon with a less-than-stellar rendition of Happy Birthday. Joel, ever the good sport, jokingly pretended to be unimpressed. Stern reassured listeners, quoting Joel: “I’m not dying.” The singer’s spirit remains unbroken, and his humor shines through despite the setbacks.
Joel took to social media to explain that recent performances exacerbated his symptoms, forcing him to step back from the stage. “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience,” he wrote, expressing gratitude for fans’ support. His wife, Alexis Roderick Joel, echoed this, thanking fans for their love and emphasizing the family’s hope for his recovery. “Bill is a father and husband at the center of our world,” she said.
At 76, Joel’s relentless touring schedule over the past 15 years has taken a toll, but his wife insists he’s otherwise healthy and committed to getting back on stage. For now, the Uptown Girl singer is prioritizing his health, with fans eagerly awaiting his return.

Billy Joel’s still got that New York state of mind, even if his brain’s playing a different tune. Canceling shows? Tough call for the Piano Man, but smart—he’s not ready to fade out like a bad cover of Vienna. Here’s a joke: Why did Billy Joel’s brain take a break? It was tired of keeping up with all those rapid-fire lyrics! Wishing him a swift recovery, because the stage needs its captain.
