Alexis Joel shares her endometriosis battle and Billy Joel’s health-driven tour postponement, highlighting family support and new research efforts.
Alexis Roderick Joel, wife of rock icon Billy Joel, has opened up about her grueling battle with endometriosis, a condition that left her in chronic pain while raising two young daughters and supporting her husband on tour. The 75-year-old Piano Man recently postponed his tour for four months due to a medical condition, prioritizing recovery and physical therapy.
Alexis shared her story of misdiagnoses, failed surgeries, and excruciating pain, which she endured while managing family life and global travel. "Touring with kids and a time zone change is insane enough," she said, "but add chronic pain, and it’s a whole different beast." Her perseverance led her to Dr. Tamer Seckin, a renowned endometriosis specialist, who performed a life-changing surgery, removing 27 lesions and her appendix.
Billy, a five-time Grammy winner, has been a pillar of support, researching endometriosis and stepping up when Alexis needed him most. "He’s emailing me articles like, ‘Did you know this about endometriosis?’" Alexis said, highlighting their family’s teamwork. The couple, parents to Della, 9, and Remy, 7, recently celebrated the opening of the Seckin Endometriosis Center at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a groundbreaking research hub for the condition affecting over 200 million women worldwide.
As Billy recovers, Alexis emphasized the importance of health over schedules. "He’s 76, and he’s been performing nonstop for 15 years. Sometimes, your health has to come first." The tour is set to resume in Pittsburgh on July 5, 2025, with Billy expected to make a full recovery.
