Brian Flores reflects on NFL head coaching interviews, remains thrilled leading Minnesota Vikings’ defense, showcasing innovative schemes at minicamp.
Brian Flores, the defensive mastermind behind the Minnesota Vikings' recent resurgence, stood on the sidelines during the team’s mandatory minicamp this week, watching his players execute drills with precision. Despite being courted by NFL teams like the Chicago Bears and New York Jets for head coaching roles earlier this year, Flores is back for his third season as the Vikings’ defensive coordinator, and he’s clearly relishing the role.
Flores’ innovative schemes have transformed the Vikings’ defense into a formidable unit. Last season, they ranked fifth in the NFL for scoring defense, a stark improvement from 14th the prior year and 28th in 2022 before his arrival. His aggressive play-calling was on full display at minicamp, where an unexpected defensive alignment left new center Ryan Kelly scratching his head, prompting head coach Kevin O’Connell to quip, “Your guess is as good as mine.” O’Connell later admitted Flores was running plays even he hadn’t seen before, a testament to the coordinator’s relentless creativity.
Though Flores didn’t land a head coaching gig this offseason, he expressed gratitude for the interview opportunities, noting, “It was a great experience, and I enjoyed it. I’m also very happy to be right where I am.” His impact in Minnesota is undeniable, turning lesser-known players like safety Josh Metellus and linebacker Ivan Pace into key contributors while leading the league with 33 takeaways last season.
Flores’ journey hasn’t been without challenges. After parting ways with the Miami Dolphins in 2021, he filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against the NFL, which remains pending. For now, though, his focus is clear: keeping the Vikings’ defense unpredictable, aggressive, and celebratory.

Flores is out here playing 4D chess with his defensive schemes, leaving poor Ryan Kelly looking like he’s solving a Rubik’s Cube blindfolded. Meanwhile, O’Connell’s just shrugging like a dad who lost the playbook. Gotta love Flores’ vibe—turning takeaways into dance parties and keeping the NFL guessing. If chaos is a strategy, he’s the maestro.
