Candace Parker reflects on the powerful life lessons and legacy of her legendary Tennessee coach, Pat Summitt, sharing personal stories and ongoing efforts to honor Summitt’s impact.

Before becoming a two-time WNBA MVP and one of the most recognizable faces in women's basketball, Candace Parker carved her legacy at the University of Tennessee, leading the Volunteers to two national championships while earning NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors twice. At the heart of Parker's collegiate success was the legendary coach Pat Summitt, whose lessons have stayed with her long after her playing days in Knoxville.

During a "Storytime" segment on "NBA on TNT," Parker, now an analyst, shared a personal story that underscored Summitt's influence. "Eye contact is really, really, really important," Parker recalled, describing how Summitt insisted she look directly at her during conversations. "She was the first person who made me truly look at her when she spoke." This seemingly simple lesson has become a cornerstone of Parker's life, even influencing her parenting style. "When I’m at home, and I’m parenting my son, he says, ‘Look at me. Look at me.’ I didn’t realize I say that all the time," Parker said tearfully, adding, "She had this crystal blue stare that could make you want to run through walls. Carrying out her legacy is truly important."

Summitt, who passed away in 2016 from complications due to early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, left an indelible mark not just on Parker but on the entire basketball community. Known as one of the greatest college basketball coaches of all time, Summitt's record includes eight national championships during her historic tenure with Tennessee.

Adam Lefkoe, Parker's co-host, chimed in with his own admiration, recalling a story Parker had shared about her early days at Tennessee. "We all wish to have a relationship with somebody the way you did with Pat," Lefkoe said. "I’ll never forget you telling me how, when you were injured, she made you sit and talk with her. It’s a blessing. Thank you for sharing these stories with us."

Parker continues to honor her mentor through her role on the Pat Summitt Foundation's Board of Directors. The foundation is dedicated to advancing Alzheimer’s research, keeping Summitt's legacy alive in a way that extends beyond the basketball court.

It’s not every day you come across a coach who leaves a lifelong imprint on their players, and Summitt’s impact on Parker—and countless others—is a testament to her greatness. Eight national titles and a legacy of life lessons? Talk about a slam dunk.

Pat Summitt wasn't just a coach; she was a life architect. It's rare to hear about someone who could teach basketball and parenting skills in the same breath, but that's exactly what she did for Candace Parker. Summitt's ability to instill discipline and heart into her players is the kind of thing that transcends sports—and eye contact as a life lesson? Genius. No wonder she made people feel like they could walk through walls with just a look.
