The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) appears to be moving forward with the World Health Organization (WHO), despite former President Donald Trump's executive order to withdraw the U.S. from the global body. The CDC confirmed its participation in an upcoming WHO conference on the influenza vaccine.
A CDC spokesperson stated that they would be "actively participating virtually at the WHO vaccine consultation meeting for the recommendation of viruses for 2025-26 Northern Hemisphere Vaccine this week."
Notably, the agency didn't specify whether it had received an exemption from the executive order, which previously mandated all officials to cease collaboration with the WHO.
Trump's initial executive order to withdraw from the WHO came after criticisms of the organization's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, alleged failures in reform, and concerns over financial burdens placed on the U.S. I remember when that happened—it was quite the rollercoaster.
He had also suggested potential re-entry into the WHO if the organization underwent significant reforms. Following Trump's order, the WHO expressed disappointment and hoped for a reconsideration by the U.S.
During his term, Trump initiated the withdrawal process in July 2020, a decision that was later reversed by President Joe Biden, who reinstated U.S. participation in the WHO.

The back-and-forth between administrations highlights the complexities of global health policy and the ongoing debate about the U.S.'s role in international organizations. It's a delicate balance between national interests and global cooperation.
