Chito Martinez, MLB's Lone Belizean Trailblazer, Dies at 59

Chito Martinez, who made history as the only Major League Baseball player ever to hail from Belize, has passed away at the age of 59. The Baltimore Orioles confirmed his death on Tuesday, marking the end of a unique chapter in baseball history.

Martinez spent three seasons as an outfielder for the Orioles, from 1991 to 1993. He played in 158 games, maintaining a solid .259 batting average, with 18 home runs, 58 RBIs, and 22 doubles—a steady contribution for a player who carried the pride of an entire country on his shoulders.

The Orioles paid tribute, stating, "We mourn the passing of former Orioles outfielder Chito Martinez, the only native of Belize to play in the majors." Honestly, that's a legacy you can't just box up and put away in the attic.

Martinez's son, Dalton, shared the heartbreaking news that his father died unexpectedly on Easter Sunday. Dalton described Chito as "one of the best men" who taught the game right and shaped young lives, adding, "His presence in my life can never be replaced. Drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the sixth round back in 1984, Martinez came out of Brother Martin High School in New Orleans.
