America First Legal pushes EAC to require proof of citizenship for voter registration, defying court blocks on Trump’s election integrity order.
In a bold move to tighten the screws on election integrity, the pro-Trump legal advocacy group America First Legal (AFL) is pushing the federal Election Assistance Commission (EAC) to demand proof of citizenship for all federal voter registration applicants. This comes after President Donald Trump’s executive order to enforce such a measure was stalled by court injunctions earlier this year.
AFL filed a petition on Wednesday, urging the EAC to revise the national voter registration form. They’re asking for applicants to provide concrete evidence of U.S. citizenship—think a passport, birth certificate, or a state-issued REAL-ID compliant license. It’s a direct response to Trump’s March executive order, ‘Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections,’ which aimed to block non-citizen voting but hit a judicial wall when federal judges partially blocked its enforcement.
Critics of Trump’s order argue it’s redundant since federal law already prohibits non-citizens from voting. Yet, the current system relies on self-attestation—no hard proof required. AFL, however, isn’t waiting for the courts to settle the dust. Their petition claims the EAC has the wiggle room to act independently, despite ongoing legal battles over separation of powers. As AFL Vice President Daniel Epstein put it, this is about forcing a change in the forms the EAC distributes—and they’re ready to fight for it in court if needed.
The debate over voter registration rules continues to heat up, exposing deeper fault lines in how America safeguards its democratic process. Will the EAC step up, or will this remain another political tug-of-war? Stay tuned as this story unfolds.

Well, folks, if voting is the heart of democracy, AFL is basically demanding a full-body scan at the door. Can’t blame them for wanting to double-check IDs, but isn’t it ironic that in the land of the free, proving you’re free to vote is turning into such a circus? I bet even the Founding Fathers are scratching their wigs over this one—wonder if they’d accept a quill-written birth certificate?
