Country Star Phil Vassar Was 'Blasted' Back to Life After Dying Twice

Phil Vassar, the country music star known for hits like "Just Another Day in Paradise," is celebrating life with renewed gusto after surviving not one, but two brushes with death. In a story that feels like something out of a Hollywood script, Vassar shared his incredible journey of recovery after suffering a heart attack and stroke while on tour in 2023.

Vassar, 62, revealed that he "dropped dead" twice during his medical emergency, which occurred during a Christmas tour with fellow country artist Deana Carter. First responders worked tirelessly, shocking him 11 times to revive him, even cracking a few ribs in the process. "They blasted me back to life," Vassar said, praising the lifesaving crew for their determination and skill.

The ordeal left Vassar with a long road to recovery. He spent over a year in rehab, relearning basic motor skills, including how to walk. A pivotal moment came when a piano was brought into his rehab room. At first, he simply stared at the instrument, unsure if he'd ever play again. But soon, the music returned to him, and with it, a sense of hope and purpose. "It kind of came back," he recounted. "I was very, very glad to have that happen."

Despite living what he described as a healthy lifestyle—he had only 3% body fat at the time of his heart attack—Vassar discovered he had a genetic heart disease. The revelation prompted a shift in his fitness routine, with more emphasis on less strenuous activities like bike riding and walking. "I really thought I was in shape," he explained, but admitted he hadn't been feeling well prior to the incident.

Vassar credits his faith for helping him navigate the darkest moments of his recovery. "God has blessed me immensely," he said, recalling nights spent praying in the dark. The experience, he noted, gave him a new perspective on life. "You come out on the other side with a different view on life for sure.… I feel great, I feel physically wonderful, and mentally I'm just kind of getting back to normal."

Now, Vassar is gearing up for his "25 Years of Paradise" comeback tour, celebrating the 25th anniversary of his iconic hit. The multi-platinum singer-songwriter plans to perform across multiple states, including Kentucky, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Nebraska. For Vassar, every moment on stage is a testament to his survival and gratitude for life's second chances. "I plan to take advantage of every second," he said.
