Rumors swirled about a potential trade of Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott to the Cleveland Browns, but reports confirm no such talks are underway as NFL Draft approaches.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott found himself in the crosshairs of a whirlwind trade rumor on Wednesday, just weeks ahead of the highly anticipated NFL Draft.

The rumor gained traction after Cleveland-based sports broadcaster Bruce Drennan shared on his show that the Cleveland Browns were allegedly in talks to acquire the veteran quarterback. "Get ready for this one," Drennan teased. "I’ve got a pretty darn good source within the Browns’ organization — a couple, actually. I heard, since our last show, that part of the reason Myles Garrett was so willing to sign this extension — yeah, money, money, money — is because the Browns are negotiating as we speak with the Dallas Cowboys for a trade for Dak Prescott."

According to Drennan, the proposed deal would involve Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II and some draft picks heading to Dallas. Naturally, social media exploded with speculation, but as people began crunching numbers, the financial feasibility of the trade seemed questionable.

The Browns reportedly have $18 million in cap space remaining for 2025, as per Over the Cap. Meanwhile, Prescott's cap hit for 2025 alone stands at a staggering $52.9 million, according to Spotrac. With Prescott's cap hits ballooning even further in subsequent seasons — $76.5 million in 2026 and around $70 million in 2027 — the odds of this trade materializing without Dallas absorbing some of the financial burden seem slim. Oh, and let’s not forget Prescott’s full no-trade clause, which essentially gives him veto power over any deal.

To add a splash of reality to the rumor mill, Yahoo Sports reported later in the day that no trade discussions involving Prescott are currently underway. Case closed, for now.

The Browns appear committed to Deshaun Watson as their starting quarterback for the upcoming season, and with the No. 2 pick in the draft, they could potentially land a top QB prospect like Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders if they decide to bolster their quarterback room.

For now, it seems Prescott will remain firmly planted in Dallas — much to the relief of Cowboys fans. But hey, the NFL offseason is the land of unexpected twists, so who knows what tomorrow will bring?
