Ted Cruz slams Democrats for defending alleged MS-13 member, highlighting immigration tensions and Trump derangement syndrome.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has taken a sharp jab at Democrats, labeling their defense of alleged MS-13 gang member Kilmar Abrego Garcia as a symptom of "crazy town" politics. Cruz argues that some Democrats, driven by an intense aversion to Donald Trump, are prioritizing illegal immigrants and criminals over American citizens. His remarks follow actions by Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen and other Democrats who traveled to El Salvador to advocate for Abrego Garcia’s return to the U.S. after his deportation.
Cruz didn’t hold back, criticizing Democrats for what he sees as a baffling political strategy: championing individuals like Abrego Garcia, who police and court records identify as an MS-13 gang member. Arrested in Maryland in 2019 and linked to human smuggling, Abrego Garcia’s case has sparked heated debate. Despite Democratic claims of wrongful deportation, evidence from DHS and court documents paints a darker picture, including allegations of domestic violence by his wife.
The controversy escalated when Newark, N.J., Mayor Ras Baraka and congressional Democrats stormed an ICE facility, highlighting the party’s aggressive stance on immigration. Meanwhile, a Supreme Court ruling in April 2025 ordered the Trump administration to facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return, though Attorney General Pam Bondi noted that El Salvador holds the final say.
When pressed about the domestic violence allegations, Sen. Van Hollen deflected, insisting that legal processes must prevail. “Stick to the Constitution,” he urged, sidestepping the specifics. Cruz, however, sees this as emblematic of a broader Democratic misstep, accusing them of letting Trump animosity cloud their judgment.
