Daniel Noboa has been re-elected as Ecuador's president, securing a convincing victory in a national runoff that played out against a tense backdrop of rising crime and public worry.
Running with the right-wing National Democratic Action party, Noboa faced off against Luisa González, the candidate from the left-leaning Citizen Revolution Movement, which is closely tied to former President Rafael Correa. In the end, Noboa took home approximately 55.8% of the vote, according to the National Electoral Council, while González held 44%.
With more than 90% of ballots already counted, Ecuador's voters—over 13 million of whom were eligible, thanks to the country’s compulsory voting system—showed clear support for Noboa's tough stance on crime. Honestly, nothing says 'get tough' quite like a banana magnate-turned political leader.
Noboa, who was born in Miami and inherited a substantial banana business fortune, is relatively new to politics. He originally emerged as a surprise winner in 2023, after a snap election was called to replace former President Guillermo Lasso. It's not every day a political rookie strolls into the presidency, but Ecuadorians seem to like their surprises with a side of plantains.
It remains to be seen if Noboa's approach can calm the nation's nerves as crime continues to be a pressing concern. For now, Ecuador looks set to stick with its current leader, hoping for safer streets and, maybe, a bit less political drama.

Noboa’s journey from banana fortune to presidential palace could make for the world’s oddest career fair brochure. Here’s hoping his crime crackdown brings more peace than potassium to Ecuador.
