Deion Sanders posts a cryptic message after his son Shedeur unexpectedly slides to the fifth round in the NFL Draft, sparking controversy and debate.
Deion Sanders just dropped a mysterious message on social media after watching his son Shedeur’s much-hyped NFL Draft prospects nosedive from a first-round buzz all the way to the fifth round. The Cleveland Browns drama is starting to cool, but Sanders Sr. stirred the pot again by posting on X: "A lie don’t care who tells it or repeats it. Its goal is to be heard. The truth could be standing right in front of u consistently for years but u don’t see it because a lie is in your mind. The Truth may not be as popular as a lie but the Truth wins in the end."
He didn’t spell out what exactly he meant by "a lie," leaving everyone guessing. Theories have been flying ever since Shedeur’s name slipped down the draft board. Some claim teams didn’t want him because he’s a "strong Black man," while others suggest there was some "Kaepernick-like collusion" at play. NFL players, never ones to stay out of the fray, had their own takes on what message the league was sending Shedeur.
But ESPN analyst Damien Woody cut through the noise on "Get Up." His take? The NFL just didn’t think Shedeur was "that guy." Woody explained, "If you’re that guy, they’re gonna pick you in the first round. The NFL and all these teams are in the winning business. If you can help a team win, they are going to pick you." Woody pointed out that Shedeur’s celebrity status probably didn’t help either, calling it "the ultimate recipe for why you found yourself in the fifth round." Ouch.
Former No. 2 pick Robert Griffin III wasn’t buying that explanation and suggested that Shedeur was being taught a "lesson" that other high-profile quarterbacks—think Eli Manning, Andrew Luck, Baker Mayfield, or Joe Burrow—never had to learn. "All of these guys had the confidence, many of them had the bravado that is similar to what Shedeur Sanders has. But none of them were punished in the way he’s been punished," said Griffin.
The debate over Shedeur’s draft slide is probably going to linger longer than the Browns’ next playoff run. And with Deion Sanders in the mix, you know the last word hasn’t been spoken yet. Honestly, at this point, the only thing more cryptic than Deion’s post is the Browns’ playbook.
