Rep. LaMonica McIver faces federal assault charges after clashing with agents at an ICE facility, while fundraising off the incident raises questions about her motives.
New Jersey Democratic Representative LaMonica McIver faces federal charges for allegedly assaulting federal agents at an immigration detention center, yet she’s turning the incident into a fundraising pitch. The Department of Justice announced charges on Tuesday, accusing McIver of "assaulting, impeding, and interfering" with law enforcement at Delaney Hall, a Newark-area facility. McIver, joined by two other congressional members and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, claimed the visit was part of their oversight duties. Baraka was briefly arrested but later had his charges dropped.
Bodycam footage, cited in the charging documents, shows McIver allegedly slamming her forearm into a uniformed immigration official and attempting to block Baraka’s arrest by pushing and striking an ICE officer. The incident has sparked controversy, not least because McIver has since used the charges to fuel her fundraising efforts. A text message obtained by reporters reveals her campaign framing the charges as a political attack, stating, "Trump is using his Department of Justice to target political opponents." The message urges supporters to donate to "fight these charges and keep speaking truth to power."
When pressed by reporters about her decision to fundraise off the incident, McIver laughed off the questions, offering a breezy "No comment" and wishing them a "wonderful day." Her refusal to engage has only amplified skepticism about her motives. Was the detention center visit a genuine oversight mission, or a calculated move to boost her public profile? The fundraising texts suggest a narrative of victimhood, but the bodycam evidence tells a story of aggression that’s hard to spin.
This saga raises deeper questions about accountability and political theater. When elected officials clash with law enforcement under the guise of oversight, only to leverage the fallout for campaign cash, it erodes trust in public service. McIver’s actions, and her nonchalant response, may haunt her as voters weigh whether this was principle or performance.

McIver’s got more spin than a Newark street fair Ferris wheel! Fundraise off assault charges? That’s like selling tickets to your own courtroom drama. Oversight or overreach, Congresswoman?
