Brief
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer faces sharp criticism from fellow Democrats after supporting a GOP-backed funding bill, sparking intra-party tension and debate over legislative strategy.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is feeling the heat from his own party after siding with Republicans to pass a continuing resolution that kept the federal government open—an act some Democrats are calling nothing short of betrayal.
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez didn’t hold back, calling the move a "tremendous mistake." Speaking to CNN’s Jake Tapper, she questioned why Senate Democrats would hand over their leverage "for free" when their job is to protect essential programs like Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare. Ouch.
Schumer wasn’t alone in crossing the aisle. Sen. Angus King, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen also voted for the House-approved funding bill. But Schumer, being the highest-profile Democrat to back the legislation, is bearing the brunt of the criticism. Meanwhile, conservative Sen. Rand Paul stood out as the lone Republican voting against the bill, which passed with a 54-46 margin. Oh, bipartisanship, the rare unicorn of politics.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi didn’t mince words either, calling the decision “unacceptable” and dismissing the idea of choosing between bad options as a false choice. Anne Caprara, chief of staff for Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, chimed in on social media, warning Democrats against “caving” to Trump’s administration. Her message? If Democrats don’t fight now, they risk misreading the stakes entirely. It’s almost like watching a political soap opera.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries dodged questions about his confidence in Schumer while urging Senate Democrats to oppose the resolution. "We do not want to shut down the government," he said, "but we are not afraid of a funding showdown." That sounds like a challenge, doesn’t it?
Meanwhile, TV personalities joined the chorus of discontent. CNN’s Van Jones lamented that Democrats lacked "alpha energy" to push back against Trump, while MSNBC’s Symone Sanders said she was "p---ed" at Schumer for folding "like a paper napkin." She even threatened to change her party registration to independent. Talk about drama.
But not every Democrat turned their frustration into a public spectacle. Some, like Sen. Mark Warner, acknowledged the tough choices at play, saying the party was stuck between "two bad options" thanks to a united Republican front. When you’re boxed in like that, it’s hard to win.
As of now, Schumer’s office has yet to respond to requests for comment. But one thing’s clear: the pressure is mounting, and the Democratic Party seems to be grappling with an identity crisis over how to deal with former President Trump’s enduring influence.

You’ve got to admire the political theater here. Schumer’s decision has sparked outrage, but let’s not ignore the fact that Democrats are facing a rock-and-a-hard-place scenario. Still, the criticism from Pelosi and others suggests the party is itching for a stronger fight against Trump. For a group that prides itself on unity, this public squabble feels like airing dirty laundry—and it’s not a good look.
