DNC chair Ken Martin faces infighting, resignations, and fundraising struggles as Democrats aim to rebound from 2024 losses and prepare for 2026 midterms.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is grappling with internal chaos as new chair Ken Martin struggles to unify the party. Elected in February 2025, Martin’s 50-state strategy aims to rebuild Democratic strength after devastating losses in the 2024 elections, which saw the party lose the White House, Senate, and fail to reclaim the House. Speaking in Cleveland, Martin emphasized, "Elections aren’t won in D.C., they’re won in states like Ohio." Yet, his leadership has been rocked by infighting, resignations, and fundraising woes.

High-profile exits have marred Martin’s tenure. Two labor giants, Randi Weingarten of the American Federation of Teachers and Lee Saunders of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, stepped down from DNC roles, questioning the party’s direction. Their departures followed a messy clash with 25-year-old activist David Hogg, whose brief stint as DNC vice chair sparked a party civil war. Hogg’s plan to fund primary challenges against veteran Democrats led to his exit, amplified by a leaked audio of Martin lamenting, "You essentially destroyed any chance I have to show the leadership I need."

Fundraising is another sore point. The DNC’s $17 million cash reserve pales against the Republican National Committee’s $67 million, a gap that could hamstring Democratic efforts in the 2026 midterms. Critics, including a former DNC official, call Martin’s leadership weak and ineffective, while supporters like strategist Maria Cardona argue he’s making the right moves despite the drama. "We have no time for this nonsense," Cardona said, urging focus on defeating Republicans.

Still, Martin points to bright spots, like Democratic wins in off-year elections and increased state party investments. But with lingering grudges from his contested DNC chair race and a party desperate to counter President Trump’s agenda, Martin’s rebuilding project faces steep challenges. As one committee member put it, "Ken is rebuilding the house, but he’s got major renovations left."

Ken Martin’s trying to herd cats at the DNC, but it’s more like wrangling bobcats in a blender. Between Hogg’s primary-challenge tantrum and labor leaders bailing, it’s clear the party’s got more drama than a reality show. Why did the DNC’s cash reserves shrink? Because they’re spending it all on popcorn for this circus. Martin’s got a tough job, but if he can’t stop the leaks—audio or otherwise—he might need a plumber more than a strategist.
