Disneyland honors 100 U.S. Navy sailors and Marines with a surprise day of fun and a patriotic flag ceremony ahead of Memorial Day during Fleet Week.
In a heartfelt nod to Memorial Day, Disneyland transformed into a vibrant salute to patriotism, hosting 100 U.S. Navy sailors and Marines for a surprise day of joy during Los Angeles Fleet Week. These service members, in port for the occasion, explored the immersive worlds of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Mickey’s Toontown, capping their visit with a moving flag retreat ceremony alongside the iconic Dapper Dans, the Disneyland Band, and Rear Admiral Richard W. Meyer, Deputy Commander of the U.S. Third Fleet.
Meyer captured the spirit of the day, saying, "It’s a rare chance to share this magic with the public, showcase our sailors and Marines, and experience Disneyland’s new attractions. It’s a moment to connect and celebrate."
Disneyland’s deep ties to the military run through its history, with founders Walt and Roy Disney both serving in World War I—Walt as an ambulance driver, Roy as a Navy petty officer. This legacy lives on in the park’s daily flag ceremonies, a tradition unbroken since 1955, even through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, once noted on social media that the flag still flies as a symbol of resilience and unity.
The event also highlighted Disney’s commitment to veterans. Ariel Elias, a Marine Corps veteran and Disneyland category manager, emphasized, "Honoring veterans is woven into the fabric of Disneyland—from daily flag retreats to our focus on Fleet Week and Veterans Day." Disney’s Heroes Work Here initiative supports veterans and military spouses through hiring and training, while the company has donated over $20 million since 2012 to organizations aiding veterans and their families.
This Memorial Day tribute wasn’t just a day at the park—it was a powerful reminder of service, community, and the enduring spirit of those who serve.

Disneyland turning into a star-spangled wonderland for our sailors and Marines? That’s the kind of magic even Mickey can’t top! Rear Admiral Meyer must’ve felt like he was commanding the Millennium Falcon during that flag retreat. But let’s be real—between Galaxy’s Edge and Toontown, these heroes probably debated whether to salute Chewbacca or Goofy first!
