The Pittsburgh Steelers face quarterback uncertainty as stars depart, but add DK Metcalf with a massive deal to boost their receiver lineup ahead of the 2025 NFL season.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are steering into uncharted waters as uncertainty looms over their quarterback situation. With Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson as the only quarterbacks currently under contract, the Steelers have some serious decision-making ahead. And let's just say, Steelers fans are probably clutching their Terrible Towels a little tighter these days.
Last season saw Justin Fields and Russell Wilson sharing the quarterback duties, but with Fields signing a two-year deal with the Jets earlier this week and Wilson reportedly exploring other options, Pittsburgh's QB lineup is officially up in the air. However, the Steelers made a splash in the offseason by securing star wide receiver DK Metcalf, and boy, did they make it rain.
Metcalf joined the Steelers in a trade deal that sent draft picks to Pittsburgh and sealed the deal with a whopping five-year, $150 million extension, according to ESPN. Talk about a payday, right?
In his introductory press conference, Metcalf couldn't stop gushing about the warm welcome he received from the Steelers organization. "Coach [Mike] Tomlin, Mr. Omar [Khan], and Mr. [Art] Rooney all hopped on the phone with me Sunday, and it just felt homey, felt welcoming that they wanted to bring me to this historic organization," Metcalf said. "Everything just snowballed from there and brought me here in front of you today." If "homey" vibes were a recruitment tactic, the Steelers nailed it.
While the quarterback situation remains murky, Metcalf seems unfazed. "They made me feel like they had the right decision with who was going to be throwing me the football," Metcalf said. "I’m not making the decision in the quarterback room. So, I’m just going to try to do the best of my abilities to help whoever they have out there throwing the football." Not exactly the kind of confidence that screams "Super Bowl bound," but hey, adaptability is key, right?
Heading into the 2025 season, Metcalf will join George Pickens and Calvin Austin III in forming a dynamic wide receiver trio for the Steelers. Metcalf, who racked up 992 receiving yards last season, decided to switch to jersey No. 4 since Pickens already wears No. 14. "I mean, he's been here, he's made a staple in the No. 14," Metcalf said. "I'm not trying to take away from anybody's legacy, just trying to help build mine." Well played, Metcalf—respecting a teammate's claim while carving out your own identity.
The Steelers wrapped up the 2024 regular season with a 10-7 record but fell short in the postseason, bowing out during the wild-card round. Now, with their quarterback situation still unresolved, the franchise is banking on players like Metcalf to deliver game-changing performances, no matter who's under center.

DK Metcalf’s calm over the Steelers’ quarterback conundrum is admirable, but let’s be real—the quarterback throwing the ball is pretty darn important. Also, his switch to No. 4 is a classy move, but you can bet Steelers fans are hoping he builds a legacy on more than just numbers. Let’s see if this 'homey' charm translates into touchdowns.
