Dolly Parton explains why she won’t judge American Idol or The Voice, celebrates Dollywood’s 40th, and honors late husband Carl Dean with a new song.

Country music icon Dolly Parton has consistently declined invitations to judge on popular singing competitions like American Idol and The Voice. Her reason? A deep empathy for aspiring artists. "I know how sincere everybody is. Even if they're not that good, they believe they are. I just can't hurt people," Parton shared in a recent interview. Her heart, it seems, is too big for the judge's chair.

While Parton avoids the spotlight of judging, she’s no stranger to mentoring. She lent her wisdom as a guest mentor on American Idol’s seventh season in 2008, where contestants like winner David Cook performed her songs. She also guided hopefuls on The Voice in 2015 and 2016, offering encouragement rather than critique.

Beyond music, Parton’s creative energy is boundless. She’s preparing to bring her life story to Broadway with Dolly: An Original Musical, set to debut in 2026. Meanwhile, her beloved theme park, Dollywood, recently marked its 40th anniversary. "It’s like having a house full of kids," Parton said, beaming with pride over the family-friendly park’s growth.

Parton’s joy is tempered by personal loss. Following the recent passing of her husband of over 60 years, Carl Dean, she shared a moving tribute on Instagram. "Words can’t do justice to the love we shared," she wrote. Parton also released a new song, If You Hadn’t Been There, dedicated to Dean, celebrating their enduring love story.

Dolly Parton’s too kind to judge, but if she did, I bet she’d give every contestant a golden ticket to Dollywood! And that Broadway musical? It’s gonna sparkle brighter than a rhinestone cowboy.
