Dr. Mehmet Oz has been confirmed as the new CMS administrator, overseeing Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP, impacting over 144 million Americans and $1.5 trillion in healthcare spending.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, the former TV doctor turned politician, has officially been confirmed as the next administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) following a Senate vote split along party lines. With this appointment, Oz will oversee a staggering $1.5 trillion in federal healthcare spending, directing programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
So, what does this new role entail? Oz will be making critical decisions about government healthcare coverage, including procedures, hospital stays, medications, and the reimbursement rates for healthcare providers. Essentially, he’s now at the helm of programs that collectively impact over 144 million Americans.
Medicare currently provides coverage to about 65 million seniors aged 65 and older. Medicaid, serving low-income individuals, covers another 72 million people. Meanwhile, CHIP, which ensures affordable healthcare for children in low-income families, assists 7.2 million individuals. That’s a hefty portfolio for anyone, let alone a man whose resume includes daytime television and an unsuccessful Senate bid.
Dr. Oz’s journey has been unconventional, to say the least. A Harvard graduate with medical and business degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, Oz first gained national fame as a heart surgeon and TV personality. His appearances on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and his own program, "The Dr. Oz Show," turned him into a household name. But his pivot to politics in 2022 didn’t quite go as planned—he lost Pennsylvania’s Senate race to John Fetterman.
Despite his political setback, Oz has vowed to modernize CMS and promote healthy lifestyles for Americans. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Mike Crapo, who championed Oz’s nomination, praised his diligence and accessibility during the vetting process. Crapo highlighted Oz’s commitment to addressing chronic diseases and leveraging innovative technologies to improve healthcare outcomes.
However, getting to this point wasn’t without controversy. Oz faced tough questions from both Republicans and Democrats during his confirmation hearings. Topics ranged from his views on abortion and transgender medical treatments to Medicare privatization and prescription drug pricing. Financial conflicts of interest were also a sticking point, but Oz promised to divest any holdings that could pose issues.
Thursday’s confirmation is another step in finalizing key political appointments under the Trump administration. As of now, there are still 233 nominees awaiting Senate consideration, according to The Washington Post’s political appointee tracker. Talk about a busy season on Capitol Hill!

Let’s be real—Dr. Oz’s move from TV host to overseeing America’s healthcare system feels like a plot twist straight out of a daytime drama. But hey, at least his background in medicine gives him some credibility in this role. Fingers crossed he can juggle the sheer magnitude of these programs without turning CMS into a reality show!
