The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence's Easter event in San Francisco blends drag, transgender visibility, and religious parody, sparking controversy and criticism from faith communities and conservative groups.

A San Francisco-based drag queen group, The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence — who describe themselves as an "order of queer and trans nuns" — has again stirred controversy with their upcoming Easter event themed "No Easter without the T." This annual celebration honors transgender identities but has drawn sharp criticism for its provocative approach to religious imagery.

This year’s gathering features a children’s Easter egg hunt and a costume contest that encourages attendees to dress up as drag versions of religious figures such as "Hunky Jesus" and "Foxy Mary." The poster for the event depicts a tattooed Jesus surrounded by men in drag, continuing a tradition from past years where participants don high heels, dresses, and carry signs with cheeky slogans like "Can I get a gaymen?" and "Haus of Jesus."

The group’s website lists past costume contest winners with titles ranging from "Barbie’s Ken Jesus" and "Historically Accurate Jesus" to "Transgender Maria de Guadalupe," "Pro-Choice Mary," and "Black Woman as God." This blend of religious parody and gender expression has ruffled feathers among many faith communities.

Conservative voice Libs of TikTok criticized the event, pointing out the apparent contradiction in inviting children to attend despite advisories that some parts of the show might be inappropriate for young audiences. Their commentary called the event "disgusting," a sentiment echoed by Catholic Vote senior advisor Steve Cortes, who condemned what he sees as tolerated bigotry against Christians.

Logan Church, political director of CatholicVote, told Fox News Digital the group’s actions are “not bold, it’s not brave, and it’s certainly not art.” He described the event as "bigotry dressed in costume," urging Christians to push back against what he views as a deliberate mockery of their faith.

The event comes amid ongoing debates around gender ideology and religious sensitivity, with figures like Pope Francis warning about the dangers of ideologies he believes threaten traditional faith values. While the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence embrace free expression and LGBTQ+ visibility, their Easter celebration highlights the often tense intersection between religious respect and artistic provocation.

Editor's Comments

This Easter event dances right on the edge of provocation and celebration, blurring lines between satire and offense. While the group's push for transgender visibility is clear, their use of religious figures in drag costumes is bound to spark heated debates about respect and free expression. It's a bold move that’s unlikely to leave any participant unshaken.
