Elon Musk has once again thrown himself into the political arena, this time handing out $1 million checks to voters in Wisconsin as part of a push to influence the state's Supreme Court elections. The billionaire, known for his bold moves, hosted a town hall in Greenbay on Sunday, where he distributed the hefty checks to voters who signed petitions opposing "activist judges."
In a fiery speech at the rally, Musk emphasized his stance: "Judges should be simply interpreting the law and not making the law. We just want judges to be judges, you know, which is the reasonable thing to ask for." He also took the opportunity to criticize the judiciary in Washington, calling it "insane" that federal judges could block presidential actions.
Wisconsin Democrats were less than thrilled about Musk's giveaway, claiming it amounted to buying votes—a serious allegation in any election. State Attorney General Josh Kaul attempted to prevent the checks from being handed out but faced multiple court defeats. The state's Supreme Court, which leans liberal with a 4-3 majority, opted not to even hear the case.
Despite the legal challenges, Musk's legal team argued that the initiative was meant to spark grassroots opposition to activist judges rather than advocate for specific candidates. The effort mirrors a similar program Musk ran last year in battleground states during the presidential election, where Pennsylvania courts similarly dismissed claims that the checks constituted an illegal lottery.
This time around, Musk's campaign appears to support Republican former Attorney General Brad Schimel, though Schimel has distanced himself from Musk's financial tactics. "I do not control any of the spending from any outside group, whether it’s Elon Musk or anyone else," he stated during an interview with Fox News Sunday. Schimel maintained that his commitment is to voters, not donors or big-name supporters.
Wisconsin voters are set to make their decision on Tuesday in what Musk has described as a "super important" election for the court's future makeup. One thing is certain: when Musk enters the fray, it’s never boring.

Elon Musk handing out million-dollar checks to voters feels like a mix of philanthropy and political theater. While his focus on opposing activist judges could resonate with conservatives, the optics of literally giving people money ahead of an election are... let's say, eyebrow-raising. Musk's ability to push boundaries is unmatched, but this move toes a thin line between influence and interference.
