Elon Musk exits DOGE, joined by key advisors, as Trump’s Cabinet takes over the mission to cut $2 trillion in federal spending, saving $175 billion so far.
In a surprising turn of events, the White House has confirmed that Elon Musk, the billionaire innovator, is stepping down from his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), alongside key advisors Steve Davis, Katie Miller, and attorney James Burnham. Since President Donald Trump’s inauguration in January, Musk has led DOGE’s ambitious mission to slash $2 trillion from the federal budget by streamlining spending, programs, and the federal workforce.
Musk announced his exit on X late Wednesday, stating, "As my time as a Special Government Employee ends, I thank President Trump for the chance to curb wasteful spending. DOGE’s mission will grow stronger, becoming a way of life in government." While the department fell short of its lofty goal, it achieved $175 billion in savings through asset sales, contract terminations, and fraud reduction—equating to roughly $1,087 per taxpayer, according to DOGE’s website.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that DOGE’s work is far from over. "President Trump and his Cabinet will now lead the charge to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse," she told reporters. The entire Cabinet, she added, is committed to continuing DOGE’s mission, with many of its employees now integrated as political appointees across federal agencies. A senior official noted that DOGE has become part of the government’s "DNA," ensuring its principles endure.
While Musk’s departure marks a pivotal shift, the White House insists the fight for efficiency is just beginning. With Trump’s team at the helm, DOGE’s legacy may yet redefine how Washington operates.

Elon Musk leaving DOGE is like a rocket ditching its booster—spectacular, but the mission’s still soaring. Trump’s Cabinet now has to navigate the fiscal galaxy, but will they find $2 trillion in savings or just cosmic dust? Here’s a joke: Why did Musk quit DOGE? He heard Mars needs a budget trim, too!
