En Vogue Singer Dawn Robinson Opens Up About 'Car Life' Journey, Says She's Not Homeless

Dawn Robinson, best known as a member of the iconic R&B group En Vogue, recently clarified that she is not homeless but rather embracing a self-chosen "car life" as part of her personal journey of healing and self-discovery.

In a statement shared with People, Robinson explained, "I want to make it clear: I am not homeless. I am temporarily choosing car life as part of my journey of healing and self-discovery. I took a risk and jumped headfirst into this lifestyle, and WOW, what a crazy, fun, sometimes scary ride it’s been." Her words resonate as a testament to embracing vulnerability and trusting the process—a philosophy that seems to guide her unconventional path.

Robinson also issued a cautionary note to her fans, urging them not to fall for unauthorized fundraising scams purportedly collecting money on her behalf. "I’ve been made aware that some individuals may be requesting funds on my behalf through platforms like Cash App, GoFundMe, or other means. I have not authorized any fundraising campaigns, and I do not want anyone—especially my loyal fans—to be scammed or taken advantage of," she said, emphasizing her gratitude for the support she receives but warning against exploitation.

Detailing her journey, Robinson shared that her decision to live in her car stems from a personal growth period. "Sometimes in life, we end up in situations that we weren’t expecting. There’s something we need to learn or teach, but we’re too afraid to push ourselves out of our comfort zones to do it—so the universe does it for us!" she remarked, adding that this lifestyle has taught her to trust herself and confront fears.

In a recent YouTube video, Robinson delved deeper into her choice to pursue "car life" and spoke candidly about the judgment she faces as a public figure. "People are like, 'You shouldn't talk about it, because you're a celebrity, and what if they judge you?' So what? What if they judge me? Life is life. … Part of being human is being vulnerable," she said.

Robinson's journey has been anything but ordinary. After leaving her parents' home in Las Vegas following a disagreement, she began sleeping in her car for about a month before relocating to Los Angeles. Her time in the city was marked by eight months in a hotel, which she left after realizing her co-manager was "playing games." In 2022, she packed her belongings and headed to Malibu, California, to fully embrace "car life"—a choice she describes as simultaneously scary and liberating.

"I felt free," Robinson said of her experience, likening it to a camping trip. Over time, she learned practical tips like covering her car windows for privacy and avoiding certain interactions. "It just felt like it was the right thing to do," she added, reflecting on the growth and self-discovery this lifestyle has brought her.

Despite the challenges, Robinson remains proud of her journey and urged her followers to confront their fears and embrace spontaneity. "I challenge you to do the things that are scary," she said. "People are going to call you crazy, and that's OK. You feel a sense of freedom, and you push yourself. Be spontaneous. Do the scary. Forget fear."

En Vogue, founded in 1989, achieved massive success in the 1990s, earning six Grammy nominations. Robinson left the group in 1997 but reunited with them in 2005 and 2009, solidifying her place in music history.
