Daniel Jones signs a one-year, $14 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts, leaving the Giants and Vikings behind, sparking a quarterback competition with Anthony Richardson.

Daniel Jones is packing his bags for Indianapolis after a rollercoaster NFL journey that saw him benched, released, and finally landing a fresh start. The former New York Giants quarterback has agreed to a one-year, $14 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts, as initially reported by the NFL Network.

The deal includes $13.15 million in guaranteed money, making it clear the Colts are opening their wallets for what they hope will be a competitive addition to their quarterback lineup. Jones, 27, turned down an opportunity to remain with the Minnesota Vikings, where he finished last season as a backup after being released by the Giants mid-season. Instead, he’ll be vying for the starting spot in Indianapolis against Anthony Richardson.

Richardson, the Colts’ fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, had a rocky rookie season, sidelined by a shoulder injury and later benched for performance issues. While the Colts envisioned Richardson as their long-term starter, the arrival of Jones could throw a wrench—or perhaps light a fire—into those plans.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard hinted at this shake-up during the annual scouting combine in Indianapolis. "It's got to be the right guy to create real competition," he said. "We drafted Anthony high, knowing it was going to take some time and hiccups along the way." Clearly, Jones fits the bill as the "right guy" Ballard was looking for.

Jones' tenure with the Giants was anything but smooth sailing. His six years with the team ended in dramatic fashion when head coach Brian Daboll benched him in favor of third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito. That move pushed Jones to request his release, leaving behind a 24-44-1 regular season record and a brief but underwhelming 1-1 playoff record.

While his stats might not scream "franchise savior," Jones brings experience and the grit of someone who’s fought through rough patches. Whether he can capitalize on this fresh start with the Colts remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: the quarterback competition in Indianapolis just got a lot more interesting.

Daniel Jones’ journey has been the epitome of NFL drama—benched, released, and now back in the saddle with the Colts. While his record isn’t stellar, you’ve got to appreciate the guy’s resilience. Maybe this new chapter will finally let him prove he’s more than just a backup. Also, the Colts' GM deserves credit for spicing things up; competition always makes for a good show.
