Gate lice—passengers who board flights out of turn—are frustrating travelers. Airlines like American Airlines are cracking down with stricter boarding enforcement and new technology.

Gate lice—the not-so-affectionate term for passengers who sneak ahead during the boarding process—are becoming the bane of travelers' existence, and many are calling on airlines to step up and enforce boarding rules more strictly.

American Airlines is already leading the charge, having implemented technology that audibly alerts gate agents when someone tries to jump ahead of their designated boarding group. This initiative launched last year before Thanksgiving and has been met with broad approval from frustrated passengers.

Other airlines, unfortunately, aren’t quite there yet, and it’s showing. On Reddit, one passenger vented about how these boarding rebels disrupt overhead bin space and create chaos. "Kudos to American Airlines for cracking down on these annoying people," the user wrote, noting how precious overhead bin real estate often gets snatched up by gate lice, forcing compliant passengers to store their carry-ons rows away from their seats. "And then you’re stuck waiting forever to retrieve your bag during deplaning," they added. Ugh, the struggle is real.

Gate agents themselves aren’t thrilled about the gate lice invasion either. One agent chimed in on Reddit, sharing frustration over sneaky passengers hiding their group numbers on QR codes or feigning ignorance. "We’ve started enforcing it more rigorously," the agent said, though they admitted it sometimes earns them the infamous stink eye from entitled travelers.

Other flyers shared their experiences with stricter boarding enforcement on international flights, where attendants ensured passengers only stored one roller carry-on in overhead bins. Smaller items like backpacks and jackets had to go under seats, and overhead bin space was strictly reserved for bags above your seat. One commenter loved the rule, saying it made the boarding process smoother and less nerve-wracking. "I wish United and other carriers would enforce this," they added.

United Airlines, for its part, rolled out its own boarding system back in 2023, dubbed WILMA—short for Window-Middle-Aisle. This seating plan prioritizes passengers based on seat locations and reportedly shaves two minutes off the boarding process. It’s efficient, sure, but does it tackle gate lice? Jury’s still out.

Etiquette expert Rosalinda Randall weighed in on the issue, calling gate lice behavior "inconsiderate" and lamenting the decline of common courtesy. "Gone are the days when passengers would call out gate lice and send them back to their assigned zone," she said. "Nowadays, speaking up could spark a full-on brawl." Isn't that a sad commentary on society?

Randall added that airlines might need to create new rules—or even new positions—to deal with boarding chaos as civility continues to erode. "When simple guidelines aren’t followed, airlines are forced to step in," she said. "It stinks for those of us who try to follow the rules." Preach, Rosalinda.

With airlines tightening policies and passengers demanding change, one thing is clear: gate lice are officially on notice.

Honestly, this gate lice phenomenon feels like the travel version of cutting the line at Disneyland—except it’s not just annoying, it’s actively messing with overhead bin space and stressing out everyone else. I mean, can we all just wait our turn like civilized humans? Or maybe airlines should start handing out traffic tickets at the boarding gate. That might make people think twice!
