The rehoming process follows a harrowing series of events that included Bear and Nikita aiding authorities in locating Gene and Betsy's bodies at their Santa Fe residence. Initially perceived as playful behavior, one of the dogs persistently led officials to the locations, proving to be remarkably perceptive.

Sadly, the couple's third dog, Zinna, was found deceased, likely due to dehydration and starvation, according to a report from the Santa Fe County animal control agency. The report noted Zinna's stomach was empty, and there was no evidence of poisoning, infectious disease, or trauma. A somber reminder of the tragedy, Zinna's body was discovered in a crate within a closet near Betsy's location.

Meanwhile, new evidence has emerged concerning Betsy Hackman's timeline of death, which authorities previously believed occurred on February 11. Cell phone records now indicate activity on February 12, including calls to a local medical center. Toxicology results are still pending.

To protect the dignity of the deceased, the Hackman estate has successfully secured a temporary restraining order to block the release of investigative records, including photographs, videos, and any footage depicting their bodies or deceased animals.
