George Mason Patriots set an NCAA Division I record with a 23-run inning against Holy Cross, leading to a 26-6 baseball victory and rewriting college baseball history.

The Holy Cross Crusaders baseball team faced a storm they didn’t see coming on Tuesday when they played against the George Mason Patriots. That storm came in the form of a jaw-dropping 23-run second inning, which shattered a 42-year-old NCAA Division I record. When it rains, it pours, indeed.

George Mason’s explosive inning led to a 26-6 victory, leaving Holy Cross stunned. The Patriots sent a whopping 28 batters to the plate in that single inning, with 19 of them stepping up to bat after Holy Cross managed the first out. Talk about a nightmare inning for the Crusaders' pitching staff!

The record-breaking feat surpassed the previous high of 21 runs in an inning, set by the Penn Quakers in 1983 and later matched by the Wichita State Shockers in 1984 and the Valparaiso Crusaders in 2010. Safe to say, George Mason just took this record and ran with it—literally.

Holy Cross, understandably, was scrambling. The team cycled through five pitchers during the inning, two of whom couldn’t even manage to record an out. Meanwhile, George Mason freshman catcher Andrew Raymond had a field day. He doubled, walked, and racked up three RBIs in the inning alone. Not bad for a day at the office.

For the trivia buffs out there, the Patriots’ single-game record for most runs scored is 36, a mark they hilariously set against none other than Holy Cross back in March 1996. These teams seem to have a history of lopsided games.

Holy Cross did manage to claw back three runs in the fourth inning and added three more between the sixth and seventh. But let’s be honest: the damage was already done. George Mason cruised to an 8-4 season record, while Holy Cross now sits at 5-5.

Whether you call it a historic achievement or just a really rough day for Holy Cross, this game is going straight into the record books.

Okay, let’s talk about this 23-run inning. Imagine being one of those Holy Cross pitchers—you’ve barely tossed a few balls, and boom, you’re getting yanked. Brutal. And George Mason’s Andrew Raymond? Three RBIs in one inning? Freshman or not, that’s the stuff of dreams—or nightmares, if you’re on the losing side. Baseball has its quirks, but this was next-level chaos.
