Giants catcher Patrick Bailey makes MLB history with a walk-off inside-the-park home run, sealing a 4-3 win over the Phillies in a dramatic ninth-inning finish.
In a thrilling finish at Oracle Park, San Francisco Giants catcher Patrick Bailey carved his name into MLB history with a jaw-dropping walk-off inside-the-park home run against the Philadelphia Phillies. Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth with two runners on base, Bailey smashed the first pitch from reliever Jordan Romano deep into right-center field. The ball ricocheted off the brick wall, eluding the Phillies outfielders, and rolled toward left field as Bailey sprinted with everything he had.
Third-base coach Matt Williams waved him home, and Bailey slid in safely, securing a dramatic 4-3 victory for the Giants. This feat marks Bailey as the first catcher since 1926 to achieve such a rare walk-off, a record previously held by Bennie Tate of the Washington Nationals. History buffs will note that Pat Moran accomplished the same for the Chicago Cubs back in 1907.
"I just knew I got it well," Bailey said post-game, reflecting on the hit. "Once I saw the bounce, I thought, 'All right, just don’t trip over your own feet!'" His humor shone through as he admitted wishing the ball had cleared the fence for a conventional homer, unsure if he’d ever pulled off an inside-the-park run at any level of play.
Giants manager Bob Melvin praised Bailey’s clutch performance, noting, "He’s come through in big situations. Hopefully, this catapults him to even more." Bailey’s blast also made him the first player of any position to hit an inside-the-park homer in nearly nine years, since Cleveland Guardians’ Tyler Naquin in 2016.
Adding to the day’s historic quirks, MLB saw another inside-the-park home run earlier that evening when A’s outfielder Lawrence Butler led off against the Atlanta Braves with one. According to stats, this is the first time in league history that both a leadoff and a walk-off inside-the-park home run happened on the same day. Talk about a double dose of diamond rarity!

Well, folks, Patrick Bailey just turned Oracle Park into his personal racetrack! An inside-the-park walk-off as a catcher? That’s rarer than a politician keeping a promise. I bet the Phillies outfielders are still chasing that ball in their nightmares. And two of these circus runs in one day across MLB? The baseball gods must’ve had an extra cup of coffee this morning!
