Nebraska Rep. Mike Flood faced boos and protests at a town hall as he discussed America's $36 trillion national debt, budget cuts, and support for Musk-linked projects.
A Republican congressman's attempt to highlight the dangers of America's $36 trillion national debt at a town hall event quickly turned into a scene of chaos, complete with boos, jeers, and heated exchanges. Representative Mike Flood of Nebraska faced a vocal crowd in Columbus, Nebraska, this week, many of whom were not shy about expressing their disagreement with his stance on balancing the budget.
"We heard from a lot of Nebraskans last night that voiced their concerns about Elon Musk," Flood said in an interview, referencing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and its ties to Musk’s projects. Flood stated his support for DOGE and Musk while emphasizing that the national debt is not a partisan issue but an American one. However, his call for fiscal responsibility was met with boos from attendees, a reaction Flood described as "not the right response."
Flood underscored his message with a massive graphic illustrating the ever-growing national debt, prominently displayed above him during the town hall. But every mention of spending cuts seemed to fan the flames of discontent in the crowd, particularly when it came to concerns about medical programs and veterans' funding. Flood assured attendees that he supports protecting these critical areas while also advocating for greater governmental efficiency.
Things got particularly tense when a woman accused Flood of supporting cuts to cancer research programs, citing her personal loss of a sister to breast cancer. Flood, whose wife has also battled the disease, reiterated his support for medical research funding while urging the crowd to consider the broader implications of unchecked spending. His efforts to explain his position were repeatedly drowned out by boos, prompting him to ask, "How can you be against a balanced budget?"
The protest's intensity was no accident. Democratic groups, including MoveOn, had actively organized a "Musk or Us" protest at the same time and location as the town hall. Nebraska Democratic Party staff were also present, distributing leaflets to attendees. Flood called the event "fairly coordinated" by certain groups but maintained that the exchange of ideas was valuable, even if it was heated.
Despite the challenges, the Nebraska Republican remained resolute. "We have to explain to the people we represent every single day that $36 trillion national debt is a national security issue. It's a ticking time bomb," he said. Flood plans to hold another town hall in Lincoln, Nebraska, in August, undeterred by the controversy. "Confronting the issue by raising it at a town hall has a lot of value," he added.
Flood is one of the few House GOP lawmakers to host a formal town hall during Congress's recess, even as Republican leaders have advised caution in light of escalating anti-DOGE protests. His persistence in tackling the debt issue head-on may not win over every skeptic, but it certainly reflects a willingness to engage—even if it means enduring an earful along the way.

Okay, can we talk about how a $36 trillion debt isn’t just a national security issue but a full-blown existential crisis? Yet, here we are, booing the guy trying to get us to balance the books. Also, shoutout to the irony of people protesting efficiency with something called DOGE—was that meant to be a joke, or am I missing the memo? Either way, Flood’s patience deserves an award.
