Memphis Grizzlies' Zach Edey charged with reckless driving for allegedly speeding at 101 mph. The NBA rookie faces a court date and potential season delay due to ankle surgery.

Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey, the towering 7-foot-4 rookie, found himself in hot water after allegedly speeding at a jaw-dropping 101 mph in a 55-mph zone on Indiana 25. The incident, which occurred on May 1, led to a reckless driving charge, with Edey set to appear in Tippecanoe County court next week.

Edey, the ninth pick in last year’s NBA Draft and a two-time Naismith Player of the Year, claimed he was merely trying to pass another vehicle. But clocking nearly double the speed limit? That’s a fast break even the fleet-footed can’t defend.

The former Purdue star, who averaged 9.2 points and 8.3 rebounds en route to All-Rookie First Team honors, is also battling a slower recovery off the court. After spraining his ankle during offseason training, Edey underwent surgery to stabilize the injury. The Grizzlies expect him to be re-evaluated just before the 2025-26 NBA season tips off on October 21, potentially sidelining him for the opening games.

Despite his ankle woes, Edey powered through 66 games last season, starting 55, though his Grizzlies fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a first-round playoff sweep. With his court date looming and rehab ongoing, Edey’s need for speed might be better suited to the hardwood than the highway.

Zach Edey’s 101 mph sprint makes me wonder if he’s training for the Indy 500 instead of the NBA. Maybe his Kia Sorento thought it was a slam dunk champion!
