Haley Joel Osment has been arrested in California for cocaine possession and public intoxication. The actor apologized for his actions, referencing personal struggles and past controversies.
Haley Joel Osment, once best known as the haunted little boy from "The Sixth Sense," is facing some real-life trouble after being arrested on April 8 in Mammoth Lakes, California. He’s been formally charged with two misdemeanors: cocaine possession and public intoxication, according to a Mono County press release. His court date is set for July 7 at the Mammoth Lakes branch of the Mono County Superior Court.
Body camera footage from the arrest shows Osment repeatedly claiming, "I'm being attacked" while officers put him in handcuffs. When asked for his name, his answer was, "I'm an American." Not the most traditional response, but hey, stress does strange things to people.
After being placed in a police car, resort employees told officers they were "concerned about his health" because he "couldn't take care of himself." They said he ordered just one drink but was so drunk he spilled it, leading them to cut him off—which is when he reportedly got "aggravated and argumentative."
During the ride to the local jail, things got even messier. Osment accused his arresting officer of kidnapping, hurled a profanity-laced insult, and later used an antisemitic slur. The incident was captured on police cameras, and the footage has since made the rounds online, adding fuel to the fire.
The arrest initially stemmed from suspicion of public intoxication and possession of an unidentified controlled substance in a parking lot at the ski resort.
Osment later issued a public apology through People magazine, saying, "I’m absolutely horrified by my behavior. Had I known I used this disgraceful language in the throes of a blackout, I would have spoken up sooner. The past few months of loss and displacement have broken me down to a very low emotional place." He referenced the LA fires in January, which destroyed his home—a devastating turn for anyone, but still not a free pass for bad behavior. Osment added, "That’s no excuse for using this disgusting word. From the bottom of my heart, I apologize to absolutely everyone that this hurts. What came out of my mouth was nonsensical garbage - I’ve let the Jewish community down and it devastates me. I don’t ask for anyone’s forgiveness, but I promise to atone for my terrible mistake."
This isn’t Osment’s first brush with controversy. In 2018, he had a heated argument at Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport after missing his flight, leading to law enforcement being called. And back in 2006, he was charged with misdemeanor drunk driving after a car accident at age 18. He pleaded no contest and got three years’ probation.
Osment has previously spoken about stepping out of Hollywood’s spotlight. He told E! News that his parents always said, "If it's ever not fun, you can quit tomorrow," and he did take a break in 2006 to study theater at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. He found those years in LA to be "pretty tense" due to tabloid pressure, and was glad to move to New York for some peace.
After starring in "Home of the Giants" in 2005, he took a years-long break, later returning to the screen in 2012 with "The Misadventures of the Dunderheads." Since then, Osment has kept busy with movies, TV, and even video games, most recently appearing in Zoë Kravitz’s "Blink Twice," released in August.

From seeing dead people to seeing the inside of a jail cell—life comes at you fast! It’s wild how a Hollywood golden child can end up in such a public mess, but honestly, calling yourself 'an American' when asked for your name? That’s either peak patriotism or peak panic. The real plot twist here is that even Oscar nominees aren’t immune to spilling drinks and saying things they regret. Fame really doesn’t make anyone bulletproof.
