Archaeologists uncover Prince Userefre’s tomb behind a massive pink granite false door at Saqqara, revealing statues and secrets of ancient Egyptian royalty.
In a stunning revelation at Egypt's Saqqara archaeological site, a massive pink granite false door, standing an imposing 14 feet tall and 3.7 feet wide, concealed the tomb of Prince Userefre, son of King Userkaf, founder of the Fifth Dynasty (early 25th to mid-24th century B.C.). This discovery, announced by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in April, marks the first time such a door, adorned with hieroglyphic inscriptions detailing the prince’s titles—hereditary prince, regional governor, royal scribe, minister, judge, and chanting priest—has been uncovered in Saqqara.
The tomb itself is a treasure trove, housing statues of King Djoser, his wife, and their ten daughters, alongside a red granite table inscribed with funerary offerings. A striking black granite statue and a cluster of 13 pink granite statues, depicting seated figures and the tomb owner’s wives, add to the find’s grandeur. Another pink granite tomb entrance further underscores the site’s significance.
Unveiling Egypt’s past, this discovery peels back layers of a pivotal historical period, offering fresh insights into ancient Egyptian royalty and their elaborate burial practices. As Minister Sherif Fathy noted, it helps illuminate the intricate tapestry of a civilization that continues to captivate the world.

A 14-foot pink granite door hiding a prince’s tomb? Sounds like ancient Egypt’s version of a VIP speakeasy! Wonder if Userefre’s hieroglyphs say, ‘Knock twice, whisper Ra’s name.’ This find’s so grand, even King Djoser’s statues are probably jealous they didn’t get top billing.
