Family vacations are evolving in 2025, with multi-generational trips and ancestry-inspired 'roots travel' trending as families seek meaningful, memory-making travel experiences together.
It seems family vacations are getting a major upgrade with a new trend that’s bringing multiple generations together for some quality time away from home. According to the 2025 American Express Travel Global Trends Report, "fam travel" is all the rage this year, and it’s not just about parents and kids anymore—it’s grandparents, parents, and kids all packing their bags together for one big adventure.
Audrey Hendley, president of American Express Travel, noted, "Travelers, especially millennials and Gen Z, are motivated to book thoughtful, meaningful trips this year." And it’s no surprise—after the whirlwind of the last few years, people are itching to make memories with their loved ones in ways that truly matter.
The report revealed that 58% of millennial and Gen Z parents are planning to bring their extended families along on vacations this year. The main reason? A whopping 89% said it’s all about spending quality time together. Though, let’s not overlook the 24% who admit the extra hands are great for babysitting duties. Hey, whatever works, right?
Interestingly, it’s the younger family members who are taking charge of the itineraries. About 68% of parents with millennial and Gen Z kids reported that their children are actively involved in planning the family trip. Looks like the kids aren’t just along for the ride—they’re steering the ship, too.
Meanwhile, there’s another travel trend making waves: "roots travel." This one’s more about exploring your ancestry and connecting with your heritage. Adam Duckworth, president and founder of Travelmation, explained that roots travel is especially appealing to older generations who have both the time and finances to dive into their family histories. And they’re not going alone—they often invite the whole family to join in on the journey.
From multi-generational trips to ancestry-inspired adventures, one thing is clear: travel is evolving into something more meaningful. It’s a heartwarming shift, though let’s hope the family bonding doesn’t get tested too much during those long road trips or airport layovers.

Isn't it funny how the younger generation is stepping up as travel planners? It’s like the kids are saying, 'Move over, Mom and Dad, we’ve got this.' Also, I can’t help but chuckle at the 24% admitting they bring family along for babysitting help—let’s call it multi-generational teamwork!
