Democratic Reps. Jasmine Crockett and Hank Johnson fiercely criticize Donald Trump’s policies, likening them to slavery-era America, amid Trump’s rising support among minority voters.
First on Fox: In a fiery livestream on Tuesday, two Democratic lawmakers accused former President Donald Trump of pushing policy agendas that hearken back to slavery-era America. Representative Jasmine Crockett and Representative Hank Johnson didn’t hold back as they lambasted Trump’s positions during the "State of the People" stream, a counter-narrative to Trump’s address to Congress.
Rep. Crockett zeroed in on Trump’s immigration policies, claiming they are designed to pit Black Americans against immigrant workers. "They have decided to go after immigrants and things like that and say, ‘oh they takin your black jobs.’ Not really," Crockett remarked during the stream. "They are obviously jobs they want us to go back to, such as working the fields... clearly he is trying to make us go back to the fields."
Not to be outdone, Rep. Johnson echoed Crockett's sentiments, suggesting Trump’s education policies aim to marginalize Black communities. "It’s a recipe to make education unavailable to Black people," Johnson asserted. "It puts us back to when America was ‘great’ and we were picking cotton... confined to doing that kind of work. We gotta watch out for where we are headed." He emphasized the importance of collective resistance, saying, "It’s the people that will save our democracy."
The Democrats’ statements come as Trump continues to see unexpected gains among minority voters. According to a Fox News Voter Analysis, Trump made significant inroads with Black and Hispanic voters in the November elections, improving his 2020 performance by seven points among Black voters and six points among Hispanics. He also gained traction with young voters, with a ten-point increase among those under 30.
One particularly striking example of Trump’s success with Black voters occurred in Anson County, North Carolina, a region with a 47% Black population. There, Trump eked out a victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, marking the first Republican win in the area since the 1970s.
Meanwhile, Rep. Crockett has been no stranger to controversy herself. She recently faced backlash on social media for calling Trump a "dictator" and "enemy to the United States." Her fiery rhetoric also extended to Elon Musk, whom she suggested should "F--- off" in a viral clip.
Fox News Digital reached out to the offices of Crockett and Johnson for further comment on their statements, but as of now, no additional remarks have been provided. Love them or loathe them, these Democrats sure know how to throw down a verbal gauntlet.
