Jewish group slams NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani for mocking Hanukkah, raising concerns over antisemitism and his campaign’s impact.

A Jewish advocacy group, Stop Antisemitism, has sharply criticized New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani for posting a video that mocks Hanukkah traditions. The video, shared on Mamdani’s X account in December 2024, featured the Geeta Brothers Duet Group, a comedic duo dressed in stereotypical Jewish attire, spinning dreidels and lighting a menorah. "Our holidays are sacred, not your punchline, Zohran," the group declared, condemning the post as offensive.

Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, captioned the video, "Happy 3rd night of Hanukkah from Astoria and Long Island City." He also shared a Christmas-themed parody from the same group, suggesting a pattern of trivializing religious traditions for humor. His campaign has not responded to requests for comment.

Beyond this incident, Mamdani’s campaign has faced persistent accusations of antisemitism. He has repeatedly declined to affirm Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state, instead advocating for a state with "equal rights" during a June debate. His support for the BDS movement and refusal to condemn the phrase "globalize the intifada" have further fueled criticism. Liora Rez, founder of Stop Antisemitism, warned that Mamdani’s mayoral win would be "catastrophic" not only for Jewish residents but for all New Yorkers, citing his socialist policies and troubling stances.

The controversy underscores deeper tensions in Mamdani’s campaign, as his actions continue to spark debate over cultural sensitivity and political priorities in the race for City Hall.

Mamdani’s Hanukkah video flop is like a dreidel spinning out of control—landing on all the wrong sides. Mocking sacred traditions while dodging Israel questions? That’s a campaign strategy bold enough to make even a socialist blush.
