NFL legend Jimmy Johnson is retiring from broadcasting after 31 years with FOX Sports, marking the end of an era on 'Fox NFL Sunday' and leaving a lasting legacy.
Jimmy Johnson, the NFL coaching icon and a cornerstone of "Fox NFL Sunday," has officially announced his retirement from broadcasting, ending an incredible 31-year run with FOX Sports.
Johnson, who joined FOX Sports in 1994 after coaching stints with the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins, became a beloved figure on the network. Known for his sharp analysis, he shared the stage with NFL greats like Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, Michael Strahan, and even Rob Gronkowski, delivering pregame, halftime, and postgame insights that fans couldn’t get enough of.
The 81-year-old two-time Super Bowl champion broke the news on "The Herd with Colin Cowherd," revealing that the 2024 NFL season will be his final one as a broadcaster. "I’ve made an extremely difficult decision," Johnson said. "I’ve been thinking about it for the last four or five years, and I’ve decided to retire from FOX. I’m gonna miss it. I’m gonna miss all the guys. It’s been a great run starting back 31 years ago."
FOX Sports CEO Eric Shanks described Johnson's retirement as "bittersweet." In a heartfelt statement, Shanks said, "Jimmy Johnson was there when ‘FOX NFL SUNDAY’ came on-air for the first time 31 years ago, and since then has been a cherished member of our FOX Sports family. Jimmy served as an inspiration to generations of football fans with his legendary swagger, one-of-a-kind insight, and signature humor. From his motivating pep talks to his unmatched energy, he was our coach who always pushed us to be better."
Shanks also reminisced about surprising Johnson live on-air with the news of his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, calling it "an occasion we will never forget." He added, "Coach will be sincerely missed, and we wish him the best as he sets sail into retirement, like only Jimmy Johnson can."
Johnson’s departure leaves behind a legacy that helped shape "Fox NFL Sunday" into the top pregame show on television. Of the original crew, only Bradshaw and Long remain, with Pam Oliver also joining the network’s NFL coverage a year after its inception.
As Johnson steps away from the spotlight, his legendary charisma and unmatched football acumen will undoubtedly leave a void both on-screen and in the hearts of fans. Here’s hoping retirement brings him as much joy as he’s given us over the years.
