Legendary singer Johnny Mathis, famed for classics like 'Chances Are,' is retiring from touring at 89 due to memory and health issues, ending a seven-decade career.

Johnny Mathis, the legendary crooner known for timeless classics like "Chances Are" and "Misty," is officially retiring from touring after over seven decades of enchanting audiences worldwide. The announcement comes as Mathis, now 89, faces accelerated memory issues and age-related health challenges.

In a heartfelt statement shared on his official Facebook account, Mathis’ team confirmed the decision: "It’s with sincere regret that due to Mr. Mathis’ age and memory issues which have accelerated, we are announcing his retirement from touring & live concerts." The news, though sudden, coincides with Mathis nearing a personal milestone—his 90th birthday.

For fans who were gearing up for his upcoming performances, this announcement marks the end of a prolific career on the road. While Mathis will perform the remainder of his 2025 Voice of Romance Tour, all concerts scheduled from June 2025 onwards have been canceled. His final show is set for May 18 at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey.

"Johnny Mathis & his entire staff send their heartfelt gratitude to all Mathis Fans worldwide for your continued love & support of his music," the statement read. "It’s truly been ‘Wonderful, Wonderful.’" And yes, that iconic phrase has a bittersweet resonance now.

Mathis launched his Voice of Romance Tour in September 2024, and despite his advanced age, fans continued to marvel at his performances. At a recent show in Minnesota, one admirer gushed online, "My favorite all-time Romance Singer Ever! At the fine age of 89…" Another fan added, "Mr. Mathis is amazing and still singing beautifully, never disappoints, thanks for your continued work and music contribution!"

His illustrious career boasts five Grammy nominations, induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame three times, and a record as Columbia Records’ longest-signed artist. With hits spanning decades, Mathis’ legacy is stitched into the very fabric of American music. His classics, like "Wonderful, Wonderful" and "It’s Not for Me to Say," dominated Billboard charts in the '50s, while "Chances Are" soared to No. 1.

As fans say goodbye to Mathis’ touring days, his contributions to music will continue to resonate through generations. After all, few artists can claim such a long and storied career that still feels timeless.
