Knife-Wielding Man Attacks in Amsterdam, Injures Five Including Two Americans

A shocking knife attack in the bustling shopping district of Amsterdam left five people seriously injured on Thursday, including two Americans, Dutch police confirmed.

The chaos erupted near the city's Dam Square late Thursday afternoon when a man wielding a knife began stabbing random victims, according to authorities. The attack lasted several minutes before a courageous passerby intervened, overpowering the suspect and effectively ending the rampage.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, shutting down the area and deploying ambulances alongside a trauma helicopter to attend to the victims. The injured include a 69-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman from the U.S., a 73-year-old woman from Belgium, a 26-year-old man from Poland, and a 19-year-old woman from Amsterdam.

While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, authorities are investigating the possibility that the suspect randomly targeted individuals. Amsterdam's Mayor Femke Halsema expressed her deep concern over the incident, stating, "Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and loved ones. We hope to soon get more clarity about the background of this horrible stabbing."

The suspect, injured during his apprehension, was detained with the assistance of a civilian, police spokesperson Eline Roovers told the Associated Press. Another police spokesperson, Guido Oostorm, confirmed that the victims were being treated at local hospitals.

A U.S. State Department spokesperson acknowledged the involvement of U.S. citizens in the incident, saying, "We extend our sympathies to the victims and to the families of those affected. We can confirm that two U.S. citizens were injured. Due to privacy and other considerations, we have no further comment."
